Linguistic origins
Maltese is the national language and one of the two official languages of Malta, along with English. It originated from Sicilian Arabic, a variety of Classical Arabic spoken in Sicily during the period of Arab domination from 827 to 1091.
Currently, the Maltese language is a mix of Arabic, Italian, English and elements of other foreign languages. It is written using the Latin alphabet with the addition of several modified letters.
